The further east you walk (toward the trolley stop) the sketchier the neighborhood becomes, but I had no problems. The closest trolly stop is on Market and Park, another 3 block walk. I liked being far away from the madness of Gaslamp but close enough to walk there anytime, even evening. The neighborhood is called East Village and it is about 3 blocks from the Gaslamp District. There are a couple of other bars and restaurants within 1-2 blocks of the hotel a Thai place, a bar/restaurant/bowling alley, Basic pizza (very good!), Smash Burger, a 7-eleven one block toward the baseball stadium, and a CVS on Market ST and 6th? There is a Starbucks two blocks away too if you require one. They make a variety of sandwiches and with coffee it was usually around $8. The rest of my stay I ate around the corner at Brooklyn Bagels & Bialys which I recommend for the best bagels in San Diego. The scrambled eggs with spinach were good but the potatoes were cold. I ate in the hotel dining room one morning for breakfast and it was ok. Window in the room opens for fresh air which is also nice. If this is a turn-off, make sure you are not assigned room 202. ![]() Third, room 202 is above then kitchen so I could smell breakfast cooking in the morning and steak and burgers at night. The hot water turned lukewarm on 3 of the 5 mornings I used the shower at around 8 a.m. Three minor points: there was a pipe that made a clicking noise in the heating vent in the bathroom which was annoying, but by closing the bathroom door I was not disturbed by it. The room was very large and in wonderful condition. ![]() It was fine for what I paid (about $100 a night), but if I had booked directly with the hotel I would have requested a room change. They put me in room 202 which was a handicap-accessible room on the second floor (202), possibly because I prepaid using a discount rewards program. Stayed here 5 nights over Christmas.the hotel is very nice.
